Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase. -Martin Luther King, Jr.
What first steps beckon to you this year?
If you've found yourself hesitant to "just begin" a project, manuscript or new life direction, you're not alone. My coaching clients often seek me out because they became tired of dawdling (sometimes for months or even years) at the base of a staircase who's form they couldn't quite make out clearly from the start. It was time to get started.
Moving forward with big goals --taking the first step on the staircase--requires the faith Dr. King speaks of: trust, belief and confidence.
A few suggestions for your journey:
- If you're pursuing a dream that really matters to you, trust that you will find the skills, resources and assistance you need along the way.
- Believe that working on something that matters so deeply can only it enrich your life...and potentially the lives of many others.
- Have confidence that focusing on the first step of your project is all you need to do to get started. It really can be that simple.
Finally, don't worry too about how much of your staircase you can or cannot see. For today, just lift your foot and plant it on that first step. Begin!
